What To Do In New York: The April Edition by Teddy Fitz

Teddy Fitz loves Spring in New York! This month, he decided to share his favorite things to do in the city during April.

Take A Bus Tour
There are lots of different bus tours of New York, that will give you a great tour of the city! If it’s your first time in New York, it will give you a good overview of the city and if you’re short on time then it’s the perfect way to make sure you see all the sights!

Visit Central Park
Now that the weather is starting to warm up, it’s the perfect time to visit Central Park! With the warmer weather, the park comes to life and it’s a great way to pass a day! Make sure you check out our blog on everything there is to see and do in Central Park.

Orchid Show New York Botanical Garden
Running until 22nd April, 2019, the Orchid Show takes place at the New York Botanical Garden. The theme for this year’s festival is The Orchid Show: Singapore. The display features thousands of orchids in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. There are also a number of special evenings so that visitors can enjoy this wonderful show are dark. With lots to see and do, this is worth a visit.

Easter Parade
Each year, on Easter Sunday (April 21st) the streets of Manhattan come alive with spring colors and flowery bonnets as part of the annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival. Visitors and residents alike have the opportunity to see “paraders” wander along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets! Beginning at 10am, all wearing an Easter Bonnet are welcome to join.

Earth Day
An annual event, now in it’s 50th year, Earth Day is being held in New York City on the 22nd April, at Union (E. 17th and Broadway) Artists will create live works of art on site during the event around various environmental themes inspired by the conversation around the Green New Deal. This event is free and open to the public.

Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival NYC
Noted as one of the prettiest festivals in New York, The Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival includes the best and most beautiful elements of Japanese culture. Enjoy lots of different activities all while being surrounded by gorgeous, pink-petal trees at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The Sakura Matsuri is on Saturday, April 27 band Sunday, April 28, 2019. The event runs from 10am to 6pm each day.

Now that the kids are at home, how about keeping them occupied and testing their creativity? We, at Fitzpatrick Hotels, are asking you to share your Teddy Fitz short stories and artwork. We want to hear all about Teddy Fitz’s adventures, travels and exciting experiences!

Teddy Fitz is the Brand Ambassador for Fitzpatrick Hotels New York. Born in Dublin Zoo, Teddy Fitz travelled to New York in 1991 to join Fitzpatrick Hotel Manhattan on its opening day. When he’s not welcoming families at Fitzpatrick Hotels, Teddy Fitz loves exploring his home in New York City and on his time off you’ll find him wandering through Central Park, walking the High Line or visiting his cousins at the Bronx Zoo. On his holidays, Teddy Fitz loves to travel, whether it’s back to Ireland or to an exotic country, Teddy Fitz is always a busy and mischievous bear!

Can you come up with a short story about some of the mischief or adventures that Teddy Fitz has gotten into? We can’t wait to read your stories and please feel free to
share your pictures and artwork too! Each week, we will pick one short story to share on our website and social media channels, The lucky winner will receive a Teddy Fitz bear in the post. At the end of the competition, we will pick an overall winner who will get a three day stay in a suite at Fitzpatrick Hotels New York – with their family, of course!!

Take a short walk to Central Park where you can enjoy in beautiful nature, fresh floral scents and hungry squirrels for company! Then take a selfie at the famous Madison Avenue and board the Metro to visit the incredible Brooklyn Bridge! This exquisite bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River and it was the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge termed as “a daring act of engineering”. So, Teddy Fitz dares you to walk across!

Once you’re in Brooklyn, visit the Brooklyn Flea Market for on to go lunch and try Blue Marble organic ice cream! You can also find antiques, vintage clothes, records, art, and jewelry. Not bad at all!

Back to the Metro and the last, but not least, is one of New York’s most famous attractions – Broadway! Choose between musicals and plays, such as Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera and The Parisian Women. Enjoy extraordinary performances by great actors – we’re sure you not be disappointed.

It’s almost end of the day, and before you finish your tour, Teddy Fitz invites you to his favorite place, The Fitz Bar, on some burgers&pints (maybe more than one). Be sure to put Teddy Fitz to sleep before midnight.

Let Us Introduce You To Teddy Fitz

You may know him as Teddy Fitz, but our beloved brand ambassador actually answers to the name of Teodoir Ulysses Fitzpatrick. His middle name stems from his Mother’s love of reading, her favorite book remains ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce. Teddy Fitz inherited his mother’s passion for reading and some of his favorite authors include Oscar Wilde, Roddy Doyle and James Joyce.

Born in Dublin Zoo, Ireland on March 17th (he claims he can’t remember the year) Teddy Fitz traveled to New York in 1991 to join Fitzpatrick Hotel Manhattan on its opening day. He still travels back to Dublin a few times a year to catch up with his family and loves to visit different Irish tourist spots while he is there including, The Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and of course Dublin Zoo, of course it’s changed a lot since he lived there! When Teddy Fitz left Dublin Zoo on his maiden voyage to New York, his cousin the Red Panda moved into his house. Did you know that Teddy Fitz also has an American cousin living up at the Bronx Zoo.

When you visit Teddy Fitz in New York, he is always sure to offer you a cup of tea. Of course Teddy believes that Barry’s Tea is best and loves a ‘cuppa’ with a dash of honey! If you’re joining him for lunch or dinner, be prepared for some delicious Fitzpatrick’s homemade brown bread, followed by either salmon or sausages (Teddy’s favorites) finished off with a side of the finest Irish honey! Teddy may have lived in New York for a long time but he never forgets his Irish roots and still chooses to dine on Irish classics when he can!

On his days off, Teddy Fitz loves to spend his time catching up on Irish sports, he’s a loyal fan of the Irish rugby team and even traveled to their match against New Zealand in Soldier Field Chicago in 2016! A very proud day for Teddy Fitz as Ireland beat The All Blacks 40-29, it remains one of his sporting highlights! He also follows Gaelic Football and Hurling, when he is watching these you will often find him on the phone to his Dad, Father Fitz, discussing match tactics!

Teddy Fitz is also a very big music fan and some of his favorites to listen to include U2, The Script, Paul Brady, Phil Coulter and Snow Patrol! He has been known to show off his Irish dancing moves so watch out if there’s an Irish song playing in The Fitz or The Wheeltapper!

Teddy Fitz’s favorite part of his role as Brand Ambassador for Fitzpatrick Hotel Group is to welcome families and friends to the hotels! Teddy Fitz’s Recommendations for a First-Timer in New York!

Visiting New York is an incredible experience and there is always so much to see and do; you could spend years in the city and not experience half of it. If you are in New York for a short visit it can be difficult to know what to see or put off until your next visit. Teddy Fitz has compiled a mini guide for first time visitors to New York City compromising of some of the city’s most famous and well known landmarks.

The Statue of Liberty:
Globally recognised as the symbol of freedom the statue of liberty is a must visit destination. Gifted to America from France in 1886 this iconic monument is located on Liberty island in Upper New York Harbour. To get to the Statue of Liberty you will need to take a short ferry which will bring you directly to the island. From here you will begin your tour which lasts for 30-45 minutes. The tour provides a general history the island, the statue and of the many emigrants who’s first sight of America was of the Statue of Liberty. A visit to the Statue of Liberty is a must for any tourist visiting New York.

Empire State Building:
The majestic Empire State Building is one of world’s largest skyscrapers. It is located in Midtown Manhattan, New York, and it dates back to the 1930’s. The observation deck on the Empire State Building is one of the most popular in the world and has been visited over 110 million times by people from all over the world.
Queues to enter the Empire State Building are legendary and a trick to beat the crowds is to arrive between 8am and 11am. While in New York a visit to the world famous Empire State Building is a must and it is an experience that you will never forget.

Grand Central Terminal:
This landmark is only a few minutes walk from Fitzpatrick Grand Central! Often referred to as Grand Central Station, it’s actual name is Grand Central Terminal is a commuter and railroad terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. This station is a throwback to the olden days of incredibly detailed architecture.
Even if you are not taking a train anywhere you can spend hours exploring the magical Grand Central Station which has loads to see and do. You can also take the grand tour of the station which is provided daily.

Central Park:
The world famous Central Park is an urban park located in middle upper Manhattan. It is the most visited park in the United States with over 35 million visitors per year. The park is a beautiful and welcoming hiatus for tourists and New Yorkers alike who might be looking to get away from the busy city for a while. There are many ponds and lakes in the park and during the winter months there are two ice rinks open.
